Black: Girl With a Pearl Earring Canvas Print

I typically don't provide meanings behind my artwork but I didn't want anything to be misconstrued as to why I chose this title for this piece. The very famous painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring created by Vermeer in 1665 has been studied the world over for Vermeer's use of body position and meticulous portrayal of innocence to the young girl face. Art historians have debated as to whether she's turning away or towards the viewer. Vermeer makes a pointed statement by painting his muse with a doe eyed expression and slightly parted mouth as if she's about to say something. The most striking feature of this piece is how Vermeer is able to provide this serene expression against a "black" background (especially when Vermeer's art catalog is full of pieces that use color throughout, settings that display his mastery of depth perception and movement of light). The background paint of the infamous artwork has been tested to prove that what is now a deep black wasn't always so but over time has reacted with elements in the air to turn the paint more of a rich black hue.
My version of a "Black: Girl with the Pearl Earring" was inspired by the classic concept in Vermeer's original of the young girl painted in color against a dark background and transposed the classic take by making the subject a deep and bold black with soft highlights against a vibrant abstract background all the while maintaining the original artists concept of a serene look and of course the notable pearl earring.A perfect addition to every room!
